This is a fantastic movie. Not merely because Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are both excellent, or Steven Spielberg is his usual self behind the camera. Not merely because it is fantastic drama. All that is true, but that’s not why the movie is fantastic.
“The Post” is fantastic because it shows what free media can accomplish when it tries. What can happen when a corporation, as is asserted in the movie, lists as its primary goal not to make more money than its competitors, but to improve the republic. It shows what can happen when a media company decides to report the news instead of determining the news. We need Kay Graham and Ben Bradlee today more than ever.
